Abstract: During the Northern and Southern Song dynasties,Daoism had already formed a comprehensive doctrinal system centered on“Dao”and“Li”(principle/pattern).The Daoist“Dao”is the transcendent, spatiotemporal ultimate origin of the universe, possessing both the creativity that generates all things and the universality that governs all existence and remains unchanged throughout ages. The Daoist“Li,”as a concrete manifestation of“Dao,”encompasses the order of natural operation, the principles of nurturing life and nature, and the essential patterns of things, constituting the core logic of“Dao as substance,Li as function.”In the historical context of the“integration of the Three Teachings,”Zhu Xi deeply continued the transcendent character of the Daoist“Dao”and the normative connotations of the Daoist“Li,”and through incorporating Confucian ethical thought,he creatively transformed Daoist doctrine, thereby promoting the shared development of both Daoism and Confucianism.Zhu Xi’s act of continuation and transformation not only demonstrates the crucial support of Daoist doctrine for the renewal of Confucianism but also facilitates the exchange and mutual learning between Daoist thought and other schools of thought. It serves as a typical paradigm exemplifying the mutual emulation and symbiosis of Confucianism,Buddhism, and Daoism under the background of the“integration of the Three Teachings.”
