Abstract: This study takes the Daoist concepts of“emptiness”（xu 虛）and“tranquility”（jing 靜） as its research focus,examining their multiple interpretations across history and analyzing the application and limitations of linguistic methods in classical exegesis.Although semantic interpretation provides systematic and scientific tools for textual analysis,factors such as variant versions of texts,the expressive limits of language,and historical-contextual gaps make it difficult to arrive at a universal and living explanation.The diverse interpretations of“emptiness”and“tranquility”throughout history reflect the inherent adaptability of Daoist thought—offering a framework of value choices that can meet the needs of different eras.Therefore,this paper argues for a shift from the research paradigm of“semantic interpretation”to an interpretive path centered on“spiritual continuity.”The focus should move from recovering the original meaning of the text to understanding the dynamic transmission and practical transformation of the core spirit of the classics across time.This paradigm shift not only deepens our understanding of the distinctive character of Daoist thought but also offers methodological reflection on how to activate traditional wisdom in contemporary contexts,emphasizing that the vitality of the classics lies in their ability to transcend specific wording and continually engage in spiritual dialogue.
