Abstract: The Chongxuan (Twofold Mystery)school, which flourished in the Tang dynasty, exerted a profound influence on Daoist theory through its speculative philosophy of’double negation of being and non-being.’This article examines the Shangqing school —the most influential Daoist tradition of the Tang—as a case study of how it received and transformed this intellectual current. The article demonstrates that, grounded in proto-Chongxuan ideas already present in Wei-Jin Shangqing scriptures,Shangqing masters such as Sima Chengzhen,Wu Jun,and Du Guangting absorbed Chongxuan ontology and mind-nature theory while refusing to abandon their foundational commitment to’spiritual and physical perfection in unison’and the practical tradition of visualization and breath cultivation.Confronting the inherent limitations of Chongxuan thought for concrete cultivation, these masters undertook creative theoretical adaptations.
